Leadership

The Church Membership:
Every member has an important role to fill in the life of the church. Since the church governance is based on congregational polity, the church membership has the overall responsibility for the decisions of the church. The church body, however, has delegated the majority of the day to day leadership responsibilities to the church staff and the Diaconate.

Diaconate:
The Diaconate Board consists of six ministry areas with at least one deacon chosen by the church body serving in each ministry area. The ministry areas are Worship, Evangelism, Education, Fellowship, Edification, and Facilities. The Diaconate meets together at least once a month. In addition, each ministry area has a team of other congregation members that meet and serve together as a ministry team.

Pastor:
Pastor Brian Wonn has been serving with the First Baptist Church of Urbana since November 2001. He and his wife Barbara are originally from southeastern Indiana. They have a married son and daughter, and five grandsons. Brian served six years in the US Navy and worked for ten years in the commercial nuclear power industry prior to entering training for full time ministry. Prior to coming to Urbana, he served as pastor of churches in Indiana, West Virginia, and Michigan. Brian obtained his education at Bethel College (B.A.), The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Northern Baptist Theological Seminary (D.Min).

Minister of Youth and Children:
Kathy Stouffer has been serving as our Minister of Youth and Children since October of 2005. Kathy has had a lifelong connection with the church. She and her husband Jim have four young children. Kathy has experience as an elementary school teacher with Urbana City Schools. She obtained her education at Wright State University. Kathy has completed ministry education through the Leadership Academy of the American Baptist Churches of Ohio.

Secretary:
Deb Wissman has been serving as our secretary since May of 1991. Deb is originally from Springfield, Ohio and she is a graduate of Shawnee High School. Prior to coming to Urbana, Deb worked at the Western-Southern Life Insurance Company, the Clark County Library, and the Business Equipment Company. She and her husband Glenn have two adult sons.
